Chapter Six Sections One and Two

These are notes for your test Tuesday, 14 October 2014. Please check out the links that I have for you. One, in particular, features a 4-minute video with Hari Jones, curator of the African American Civil War Museum. I met Hari last spring while at a teachers' conference. I made a special side trip to see what was at the museum. Hari has a spectacular knowledge that he draws from primary sources, and I was fortunate to spend about 15 minutes talking with him. I did not realize at the time that he is often a go-to historian for documentaries on the History Channel. I just knew he looked familiar!

Beginning Chapter 6

Wow! Either you are reading and studying more, this blog is helping, or a combination of the two! Keep it up! The grades are looking good for Chapter 5 so far. I still have a few more to grade, and I will get those out as soon as I can. Thanks for helping me to get our portfolios organized this week. I am looking forward to having some one-on-one time with each of you to discuss your progress in writing for social studies. While we are on a roll, I thought I would put together the first section of Chapter 6. Let me remind you that this chapter involves lots of names and places. You may need to read and re-read to understand how it all fits together. Many of you will be excited that this chapter is about the Civil War. I wish I could spend more time on it than we will have. We will need to be finished within a couple of weeks, and of course, the Nine Weeks Test is Wednesday! Don't look for a study guide with everything on it. Make sure you have all your old tests together by the end of the week.

New Posts for 2014-2015

I have finally gotten the Chapter 5 presentation uploaded! Your test on Chapter 5 is Tuesday. Please use the blog to be a reference to things you may want to know more about, as a way to keep up in class, and as a way to get ahead of the class a little bit. From time to time, I will post pictures of students on the blog, but I will not post them if you do not have web permission or if I do not get permission from you. For instance, Weston gave a great presentation about cotton and separating the seeds today. It was pretty easy to see why the cotton gin was such a hit! Look for pics soon:) If you see something that you like or something that you find helpful, please let me know. I do this for you, and I love doing it for you. However, it takes a great amount of time, and if it is not doing what we need it to do, I can refocus my energies elsewhere. I want you to get the most out of my class that you possibly can!

Living History Day 2014

It's just over a day away now! I hope you have learned all your lines, and that your sets are all in order. Don't forget to come dressed and ready to perform. Bring anything that your group is counting on you to bring. Wear sunscreen and bring some for later, because it is going to be hot and sunny from all the weather reports I've seen lately. Hopefully, we'll have lots of water to keep you hydrated. Candace is coming to videotape all of the performances for us, and the local media will be here, too. Do your best, and as they say in showbiz, "Break a leg!" (you weren't supposed to take that literally, J'anita!)

Mr. Riggs visits

First period got a visit from Jessie Riggs, a Civil War reenactor since 1992. This group is researching daily life of Civil War soldiers, and Mr. Riggs' expertise should be a big help!
